The European reference model on municipal waste

Introduction

The European Reference Model on Municipal Solid Waste Management models the flow of municipal waste in the EU through the waste management system and calculates related impacts in terms of selected environmental pressures, costs and employment. This metadata sheet gives some basic information and serves as entry point into the European Reference Model on Municipal Solid Waste Management.

Description: the European Reference Model on Municipal Solid Waste Management is a tool for assessing different municipal solid waste (MSW) management options in: 1) a single EU Member State; or 2) the EU as a whole in order to provide data for impact assessments of MSW-related policies primarily at the European level.

Minimum operating requirements: this model has been designed to work with Microsoft Excel version 2007 or higher using the English language only. The use of PCs purchased in 2013 or thereafter is advised to ensure optimal performance.

Geographic coverage: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom. (Note: the model has been developed before the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the EU. Results can be generated both for the EU-28 (with the UK) and the EU-27 (without the UK)).

Rights: Access to the European Reference Model on Municipal Waste Management (‘the model’) is based on a principle of full, open and free access as established by Directive 2003/98/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council on the re-use of public sector information throughout the European Union, as amended by Directive 2013/37/EU, and Commission Decision of 12 December 2011 on the re-use of Commission documents.   1. When distributing or communicating data included in the model or data generated with the model to the public, users shall inform the public of the source of that data and information. Reference shall be made to the European Reference Model on Municipal Solid Waste Management, 2018 version, and acknowledge that the model was produced “with/by the European Union”.
  2. Users shall make sure not to convey the impression to the public that the user's activities are officially endorsed by the European Union, the EEA, or the ETC/WMGE. Any model results, model outputs or interpretation of model results generated by the user are the sole responsibility of the user and have to be labelled as such.
  3. Where the model has been adapted or modified, the user shall clearly state this.
  4. The European Reference Model on Municipal Waste Management remains the sole property of the European Union. The European Union, the EEA or the ETC/WMGE accept no responsibility or liability whatsoever for any model results, model outputs or interpretation of model results generated by the user
